What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy is a type of motorized traction that may help reduce back pain. This treatment works by lightly stretching the spine, which changes the position and force of the spine.
This change reduces pressure on the spinal discs, which are gel-like buffers located between the bones in your spine, by creating negative pressure in the disc.
As a result, herniated or bulging discs may recede, taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine.
This, in turn, promotes the healing process by encouraging the flow of oxygen, water, and nutrient-rich fluids to the discs.

What Does Spinal Decompression Treat?

Chiropractors have used nonsurgical spinal decompression in an attempt to treat:

  • Disc Degeneration with osteophytes – deterioration of disc and resulting in loss of disc height
  • Disc Bulge or Protrusion – condition in which the outer layers of discs put pressure on the spinal nerves
  • Disc Herniation – condition in which the inner part of the discs pierce the outer layers and cause pressure and inflammation on the spinal nerves
  • Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
  • Facet Syndrome – condition in which the small spinal joints are affected
  • Stenosis – refers to pain usually down both legs of arms due to pressure on spinal cord
  • Sciatica – refers to pain going down the leg due to pressure on spinal nerves
  • Worn spinal joints (called posterior facet syndrome)

You should not do spinal decompression therapy if you have:

  • Artificial discs, or Bone on bone screws
  • Bone Cancer or infection
  • Recent spinal or abdominal surgery
  • Severe Osteoporosis
  • Severe Rheumatoid Arthritis

You should consult your health professional if you have:

  • Difficulty lying on your back stomach since these positions are required for the spinal decompression machine
  • Moderate osteoporosis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spondylolisthesis – when one spinal bone has moved forward on the level below, seen on an x-ray scan
  • Undergone spinal surgery
  • Paget disease – a chronic disorder that can result in enlarged, weak bones
