Avoid The Flu with AICA Atlanta’s Chiropractic Recommendations

Nov 4, 2016

The cold and flu season is upon us and the Chiropractors at AICA Atlanta are here to offer advice on what steps you can take to prevent getting sick.

Cold & Flu Prevention

Research shows a direct correlation between the nervous and immune systems, which are both supported with regular Chiropractic examinations.

Outside of using other Chiropractic techniques to boost your immune system, try these other natural solutions out this winter to avoid catching a cold or coming down with the flu.

Chiropractic Tip #1: Get Plenty of Rest Each Night

Getting at least eight hours of sleep each night is critical for maintaining good health. Staying up too late for days at a time can weaken your immune system by as high as 60 percent depending on the circumstances.

To gain a better night’s rest, try creating an environment that is conducive to rest. Before you go to bed, turn your phone off or keep it at least a few feet away from arms reach. Avoid keeping the television on all night and try to find a consistent temperature that you are comfortable sleeping in.

Chiropractic Tip #2: Remain Active Throughout the Cold Months

Although Atlanta doesn’t experience the same type of cold temperatures as others areas of the country, it can still drop below 32 degrees from time to time. When it gets this cold outside, staying motivated and active can be difficult.

Research shows that remaining active is a great way to prevent getting sick. In fact, The American Journal of Medicine conducted a study that saw regular moderate to intense exercise helps reduce respiratory tract infections, among other common ailments.

To remain physically active this winter, try taking brisk walks around your neighborhood, or consider joining a local gym.

Chiropractic Tip #3: Get Plenty of Vitamin D

Medical research shows a direct relationship between patients who have weak immune systems and are vitamin D deficient.

Although it is harder to absorb vitamin D during the fall and winter months (when the amount of daylight begins to diminish), you can still get everything your body needs through:

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Fish
  • Shiitake mushrooms
  • Vitamin supplements

You may also want to look into comprehensive light therapy if you also suffer from seasonal depression.

Chiropractic Tip #4: Reduce Your Sugar Intake

Sugar is now known to reduce and weaken your immune system’s ability to fend off harmful bacteria or viruses.

Try to substitute refined carbohydrates and processed foods for whole grains and foods that contain natural sugar, such as wild rice or fruit.
