Checking Your Children For Scoliosis Before The School Year Begins

Aug 1, 2018

Scoliosis refers to an unusual curve shape that exists within the spine. If left untreated, it can worsen over time causing back pain and arthritis. As our staff thinks about the upcoming school year, it’s important to consider the health of your children’s spine so that they can grow healthy and strong.

Most children receive their first scoliosis examination at school during second or third grade. If you are like most parents and would like to know how you can detect the presence of scoliosis before it causes your children back pain, consider the following information.

At-home Scoliosis Exam

If you are interested in performing an at-home scoliosis examination on your children, take the following steps:

Have them bend over at the waist: Position yourself behind your child while they lean over and look at the curve of their spine. Ideally, your child’s back should have a smooth curve. If you happen to notice that their rib cage seems to be protruding more on one side than the other, contact a chiropractor right away.

Have them stand up straight: While they are standing upright, check to see if there are any imbalances between their extremities. Is one shoulder raised higher than the other? Is one leg longer than the opposite?
