Don’t Wake Up Sore and Stiff Anymore!

Jun 24, 2016

After a long summer day in Atlanta, the last thing on your mind as you crawl into bed for a goodnight’s sleep is the position your head, neck, and back take when lying down.

However, for those who find themselves waking up sore on a regular basis, you might want to consider adjusting the way you position yourself when going to sleep.

Review the following recommendations that should help you feel well-rested and in great condition each morning.

If you are still in pain when you wake up after trying these tips out, make sure to give our office a call to schedule an immediate consultation or examination.

If You Tend to Sleep On Your Back

Sleeping on your back can potentially cause your lower back area to arch, which adds significant pressure to your spine. In order to avoid this, try to sleep with your knees bent slightly upwards.

You can put a pillow or two under your knees in order to try to maintain this position throughout the entire night.

Is It Ok to Sleep On Your Side?

Sleeping on your side is actually the position that most people sleep in and is also conducive for proper spinal alignment.

If you happen to sleep on your side, try not to curl yourself up as your spine should ideally stay in complete alignment with your neck.

Is Sleeping With Pillows Between Your Knees Necessary?

While sleeping with pillows or some type of object that keeps your body in a particular set position is not necessary, but it certainly helps.

Placing a pillow between your knees when sleeping in a side position does a great job of keeping your spine and pelvis properly aligned.

The Best Position to Sleep In For Shoulder Pain

If you are not able to lie down on your shoulder without feeling pain, try to rotate your shoulder(s) back and forth slightly.

You might want to consider using extra pillows or other comfortable objects for support in order to reduce or remove pressure from this area.

The Best Position to Sleep In For Neck Pain

If you suffer from neck pain when waking up in the morning, try to place a small rolled-up hand cloth under your neck to help keep it propped up and in place.
