The Negative Health Effects of Commuting and Computing

Aug 15, 2016

If you live and work throughout Atlanta, the amount of time you spend sitting down each day is creating havoc on your spine.

Sitting Down and Slouching Forward

If you’re like most people, you probably find yourself stuck in Atlanta traffic, sitting for extended periods of time on your way to and from work, as well as spend a significant amount of time sitting in front of a computer.

These positions place tremendous amount of stress on your neck and back, which can lead to long-term health problems if left appropriate preventative actions aren’t taken.

If you suffer from chronic back pain as a result of sitting down and slouching on a continuous basis, consider the following recommendations from our Atlanta Chiropractors.

Try to Stretch Before and After Your Daily Commute

There is never a wrong time to stretch, especially when it comes to working out or resting for extended periods.

It is a good idea to stretch your arms, shoulders, neck, and legs for a few minutes before you leave your house and once you return home.

Stretching your muscles, especially the ones that run throughout your neck and back, helps reduce muscle tension and relieve stress that can cause subluxations to develop.

Be Mindful of How You Sit When Driving Throughout Atlanta

When driving to and from work, make sure that your seat is positioned at the appropriate height and that your ears are aligned with your shoulders.

Rest the back of your neck against your headrest so that your head doesn’t lean forward and your ligaments aren’t strained.

Limit Your Tension

Driving throughout Atlanta during rush hour can be extremely stressful.

To prevent tension from building up in your neck and back, try to be considerate of shrugging your shoulders periodically during your drive.

If your seat isn’t comfortable, think about purchasing some pad that provides lumbar support or try rolling up a towel to place behind your lower back.

Keep Your Feet Planted When Sitting At Work

If you find yourself sitting for long periods of time during your workday, try to remember to keep both feet planted on the floor, while also making sure that your keyboard and monitor are both an arm’s length away.

Go For A Brief Walk Each Day

It’s important to break up the monotony of the workday by taking short walks every 50 minutes.

Studies are now showing that the health effects of sitting down for too long are equivalent to smoking cigarettes.

That’s why our Chiropractors recommend to stand up and walk around for at least 10 minutes each hour.
