Save The Skin!

Jun 5, 2019

If you are like many Americans, you spend some portion of your day checking out social media and through your scrolling you may notice things like “National Friend Day,” or “National Coffee Day.”

Healthy Skin, Healthy Life

Taking care of your skin is no different and there is even a “National Sunscreen Protection Day” on May 27. This day was created to increase awareness to apply sunscreen and protect our body’s largest organ!

If applying sunscreen is a part of your outdoor regime already, give yourself a round of applause as you will find yourself in a select group, one that will have healthy skin for years to come! Studies have shown that only about 30 percent of women and 15 percent of men apply sunscreen on a regular basis when being exposed to the sun.

Choose Your Level Wisely

Applying sunscreen is important for your skin but with so many brands and SPF levels which is right for you? Starting with the right level SPF could mean all the difference! When choosing your screen, make sure that it has at minimum an SPF 30 with broad spectrum coverage. With that type of coverage you are blocking out both harmful UVB and UVA rays. As many people enjoy spending time by the water in the summer months, finding a sunscreen that is water resistant is also beneficial to make sure that your skin is protected even when you are going for a swim!

When applying the sunscreen, always allow it time to soak into the skin to allow it to reach its maximum potential. Waiting about 15 minutes before going into the sun will allow for the sunscreen to fully absorb and protect the skin from damage from the sun. Always make sure to cover every area of the body that will be exposed to the sun. Areas that are often forgotten about are the ears, top of the feet and even the neck and legs.

Reapply, Reapply, Reapply

Every two hours reapply sunscreen as well as applying lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Regardless if there are clouds in the sky, UV rays are still beaming down so don’t be fooled and still apply that sunscreen on cloudy days!
