How Chiropractic Helps: Diabetes Prevention & Management

Nov 3, 2016

Between 1995 and 2010, eighteen individual states witnessed a 100 percent or higher increase in people who were diagnosed with diabetes!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 3 adults within the United States will have diabetes by 2050 if things don’t change.

Since November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, the Chiropractors at AICA Atlanta wanted to do our part by offering relevant information around this condition, its symptoms, and the types of Chiropractic treatment solutions that exist.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a group of metabolic disease that alters how your body can process and use glucose or blood sugar.

Glucose is critical for maintaining positive health as it energizes your muscle and tissue cells, while also supporting brain function.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes refers to patients who produce little to no insulin and are permanently dependent on daily insulin therapy.

Approximately 1.25 million adults and children throughout the United States have type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes refers patients whose bodies have become resistant to the effects of insulin or aren’t able to produce enough insulin to maintain healthy glucose levels.

This is the most common form of diabetes and affects close to 30 million people throughout the United States.

Both types of diabetes contain similar symptoms that include:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Kidney damage
  • Blindness
  • Digestive complications
  • Skin irritation

Prediabetes & Gestational Diabetes

Over 86 million Americans suffer from these two types of diabetes, and both are treatable.

Prediabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are not able to get high enough for a proper diabetes diagnosis. Most patients who have type 2 diabetes start out at prediabetic.

In this state, early treatment can resolve high glucose levels and prevent type 2 from developing over time.

Gestational diabetes affects 18 percent of all pregnant women based on their inability to produce a healthy amount of insulin.

Chiropractic Care Used To Treat and Manage Diabetes

Chiropractic care can help patients prevent or manage diabetes from developing over time.

Through the use of regular Chiropractic Adjustments, your internal systems can communicate with other critical areas of your body, including your pancreas, which is responsible for producing appropriate levels of insulin.

Our Chiropractors can also provide some dietary and lifestyle recommendations that help you maintain superior health outside of our office visits.
