November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and the Chiropractors at AICA Atlanta want to offer some valuable advice on how to prevent and control type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 & 2 Diabetes

There are two types of diabetes people suffer from. The first type prevents patients from naturally controlling their blood glucose (sugar) levels.

Type 2 diabetes refers to people who do not use insulin correctly, which is known as “insulin resistant.”

This is the most common form of diabetes and requires patients to maintain a strict diet, while also self-administering insulin shots on a daily basis.

Chiropractic Care for Type 2 Diabetes

Although type 2 diabetes is the most common form, it is also the most manageable.

Maintaining a particular diet that comprises of lean fats and proteins is one of the best ways to prevent and control type 2 diabetes.

In fact, the American Diabetes Association says that type 2 diabetes can be avoided when patients:

  • Maintain a healthy diet approved by their Chiropractor
  • Quit or avoid smoking
  • Exercise several times each week
  • Avoid consuming alcohol

Specific recommendations for preventing type 2 diabetes includes:

Avoid Red Meats

According to the American Diabetes Association, patients can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 35 percent if they cut out all red and processed meat from their diet.

This includes bacon, pastrami, hot dogs, beef, and pork.

Red meat contains high levels of iron and sodium, which prevents your body’s cells from producing insulin. So instead of reaching for a prime rib at the grocery store, try substituting it with nuts, wild caught fish, or chicken.

Understand What Type of Fats You Consume

Consuming foods like seeds or vegetable oils that contain polyunsaturated fats is perfectly safe and can prevent type 2 diabetes from developing.

Trans fats found in margarine, fast-food meals, and factory-backed goods should be avoided at all costs.

Choose Water Instead of Soda

High-calories fruit beverages, soda, and alcohol all contain a tremendous amount of sugar and should be prevented to prevent type 2 diabetes from developing.

Water is the best possible choice you can make when it comes to quenching your thirst and taking care of your health.

Processed Carbs Are Not Your Friend

Refined carbohydrates significantly increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes over time because they cause your glucose levels to spike. Instead of consuming white rice or white bread, choose whole grain foods such as:

  • Brown rice
  • Wild rice
  • Oatmeal
  • Whole oats
  • Whole grain barley

Yesterday was my last day at AICA College Park since my accident in December, there is so much to say about the people who work here and the level of customer service, care, attention, friendliness, and overall amazing atmosphere that they provide. Location is perfect in College Park, right off the highway and in a small plaza with plenty of parking. The entire staff, from the front desk girls, to the physical therapy girls, to the chiros, and the medical team are AMAZING! I feel like I just lost my friends not being able to visit them twice a week every week. I will definitely miss coming here. All the smiles and warm welcomes received. The physical therapy - asking about my day, if everything is okay and helping my back and neck get better. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Hector as my chiropractor, he is awesome, was very helpful in the healing process and also a native Spanish speaker which is a plus for those of us who do speak Spanish. Before coming to AICA, I tried another injury clinic in ATL and walked out after 5 mins - so impersonal and cold. I am so glad that I found AICA in College Park. Trust me, if you are injured and need some healing and TLC you NEED to come to this clinic! Highly recommend to everyone. Thank you again to the guys and girls at AICA - xo Ms. Colon
